I have a 1950 8N (sn 371xxx) with a worn out Proofmeter mounted on the dash. I purchased a new one and cable. When I went to hook it up to the governor, there was no place to connect the cable - just a 'nub' where I expected the connection point to be, just under the oil connection.
Any ideas? Do I need a whole new governor to utilize the Proofmeter?
Thanks

Thanks, everybody, for the assistance - the pictures were especially helpful.
It's apparent that I have a governor to which a Proofmeter cannot be attached.

Saans serial story ending. Here's a photo of what an 8N governor should look like (with the connection for a proofmeter cable). I don't have a (working) proofmeter on mine, but..

Your governor housing should look like this, to accomodate a proofmeter cable.

If you don't want to get the right governer, email me. I may be interested in purchasing the meter and cable to replace mine.

Like the others said. sounds like a replacement dash that had the proofmeter. though an old governor housing. Can you take a pic of it to post?

thanks

BG, I think I have another proofmeter laying around somewhere in the barn..I'll have to look for it. I promise that this one will be in better shape then the last one I sent you. I have't heard how you are progressing on the proofmeter work that you are doing. How about an update?

Most of the proofmeters I have gotten are too far gone to repair. I'm hoping to accumulate enough parts to make a good one. It's not a cost-effective process. Richfield-Speedograph in England makes parts for some meters, but it is too expensive to buy parts and ship them. The King-Seely meters are too cheaply made to do anything with. The A/C meters usually have the same problems:hiarspring broken or the magnet-driven disc is rusted or has the spindle broken out of the center.

Have you tried a clocksmith/watchsmith for arbor (spindle), hairspring repair/fabrication?

I've worked on a number of older, smaller clocks where I've had to do just that. Some clocksmiths won't mess with fabricating bit pieces.. but to others, it's a measure of their craft.

Try timesavers.com and merritts.com for NOS clock/watch parts.

Tom, I installed a new proofmeter and cable on my '52 8N last year and installed the new cable which has a small flat end as I remember right into the same hole the old one came from in the governor. The length is exact for the distance from the proofmeter to the governor as it fits into the cable cover. It worked all right after threading on the cable cover. You have all the parts you need, just assemble them.

Lou, thanks for your response. Maybe I don't know where the cable goes or I'm not explaining my problem properly.
There's just no opening in the back of the governor to put the cable - there's no bolt or opening at all. There's a part that sticks out that looks like it should be the connector but it's closed on the end.
Thanks, again

The proofmeter was not introduced until mid 50's. Does the proofmeter hole look original or customized? The early 8N gov has a nub sticking out, but no way to hook the cable. Doubt if it even has the mechanisim to run the cable. Your dash may have been changed or the gov body may have been altered. HTH

Tom, mine is the same way.Its an early 48 and I think someone had put a later dash on it that had a proof meter in it.Whenever I started to replace it the older govenor has no place to connect. So I have a pretty meter in the dash but not hooked into the 1948 governor.I think you will have to get a newer model governor. If you should find out differently let me know how to hook mine up too. Good Luck R.M. In AL.
