Product Features

The Brocade 5100 switch is a mid-range switch that can be used in a variety of configurations. It can function as the primary SAN switch for a workgroup or as part of a larger SAN configuration. The Brocade 5100 switch has the following features:

  • Supports 1, 2, 4, and 8 Gbps Fibre Channel connectivity
  • Provides 24, 32, or 40 auto-sensing ports in a 1U switch
  • 24 ports are enabled by default. Additional ports can be enabled in groups of 8 (requires corresponding Ports On Demand (POD) license). There are two Brocade 5100 switch part numbers - one for 24 ports and one for 40 ports.
  • Two hot-swappable, redundant power supplies (each with two integrated fans for redundant cooling)
  • Support for Fibre Channel Routing (requires Integrated Routing license)
  • Support for inter-switch link (ISL) trunking, allowing configuration of up to 8 ports as a single ISL (requires Trunking license). This offers up to 64 Gbps bandwidth for switch-to-switch communication
  • Up to 42 Brocade 5100 switches can be mounted in a 42U EIA rack for a total of 1,680 Fibre Channel ports

Note - FICON support will be available at a later date after FICON qualification is completed.

You can install the Brocade 5100 switch in a Brocade or McDATA SAN.

Downloading and Installing Patches

The following tasks provide instructions for downloading and installing patches for the Brocade 5100 switch. See Firmware Requirements for the required or recommended firmware versions and associated patch IDs.

Downloading Patches

1. Access the SunSolveSM web site at:

http://sunsolve.sun.com

2. Read and accept the terms and conditions of the License Agreement.

3. From the Support category, select Patches and Updates.

4. Under PatchFinder, type the patch ID and click Find Patch.

Do not type the -xx revision number. PatchFinder automatically finds the latest patch.

5. Verify that you have retrieved the correct patch.

6. Print the page.

Printing this page also prints the patch README file, which contains the installation instructions, special instructions, special guidelines, and notes.

7. Download the patch by clicking on either HTTP or FTP as shown in the following line:

Download Patch (nn,nnn, nnn bytes) HTTP FTP.

8. Click PatchFinder and repeat the process from Step 4 for each patch.

Installing Patches

When you are finished downloading all the patches, install the patches by following the instructions in each patch README file.

Known Issues

Brocade FOS v6.1.0 contains two known issues that will be addressed in future Brocade FOS releases.

Temperature Warnings

Bug 6682988 (Brocade DEFECT000211900) - Warnings of excessive high temperature could be seen on some 5100 switches.

Workaround - Ensure that the Brocade 5100 switch is properly rackmounted and not resting on a flat surface.

Zoning Configuration Errors

Bug 6684077 (Brocade DEFECT000215612) - The enabling of zoning configuration changes fails with errors.

Workaround - This occurs when Brocade 3800 switches are present in the fabric and the administrator runs cfgenable immediately after running cfgsave. The workaround is to either skip the cfgsave step, as it is unnecessary, or wait one or two minutes after running cfgsave before running cfgenable.
